Recently there have been a number of calls about leaks in homes that never happened before. Often there is confusion about what is happening and why it is happening. The recent snow in many cases is the cause. It was light and fluffy so that it creates a very good insulation between the out side air temperature and the heat excaping from the attic. The snow right at the roof melts and runs down the shingles then when it gets over the eves of the roof it freezes and backs up. The gutters can be clean or not the issue is the drop in temperature of the water as it gets close to the outside air. When some freezes then it stops and causes more to accumulate then it slowly backs up creates a dam and also often icycles hanging off the roof. In the mean time water can find it's way into sky lights or picture windows where it never leaked before. The solution is to remove the built up snow and fix the possible caulking and sealing issues when it warms up.
